When I drove the BMW 7 series last year I only wished the car came in a smaller form and finally after the launch the of the latest BMW 5 series I now see a birth of the current BMW 7 series in a smaller form. The aesthetics of the new BMW 5 series is an all rounder which defines modernism, athleticism to the next level but has not lost it’s classic business look. The state of the art technology that you will find inside this BMW is going to be class a part which most cars are yet to offer. The design and technology has been obviously brought forward from the BMW 7 series. Pricing for the new BMW 5 series is much higher than the previous year model with BMW 520i starting at a price of AED 230,000 and BMW 540i starting at a price of AED 300,000 approx. The pricing will also cover 5 years or 200,000 kms warranty and service.
The all new BMW 5 series is now 100 kgs less than it’s predecessor by converting most of it’s parts to high grade Aluminium. By being lightweight the vehicle is now having a better balanced weight distribution which results in an improved dynamic driving characteristic and helps their tag line ‘a sheer driving pleasure‘
CONVENIENCE ACCESS
BMW convenience feature can help you open the doors of the car or even start the engine without taking the keys out of your pocket. By quickly waving your foot underneath the rear bumper triggers the opening of the luggage compartment. It is secure enough as access is only granted if they key is detected with you, objects or animals wandering down your vehicle will not open the luggage compartment.
Driving Assistance in the new BMW 5 series sedan
- Steering and Lane Control Assistant upto 210 km/h

- Crossroads warning

TELEPHONY WITH WIRELESS CHARGING
When you open the hand rest, you will be happy to see the space inside it. Telephony with wireless charging is included with a wireless charging dock and additional USB ports. A roof aerial connection found on top of the BMW 5 series improves mobile reception. Two mobile telephones and an audio player can be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth which is a good thing cause currently in my Lexus it’s only possible for one of my phones to connect to car system. You can even have a hotspot running in this car(local service provider charges will apply).
The center console is slightly angled toward the driver for the most ergonomic use possible. However, the driver-oriented placement also allows the front passenger to comfortably reach all of the functions located there, such as multimedia functions and Automatic air conditioning.
The BMW idrive touch controller is going to be your best friend in this car. You can even hand write on the touch pad integrated controller to search destinations and other information in the system. The wide range of the other functions can be searched through scrolling and moving left/right by using the idrive controller as a joystick.
Active Air Stream Kidney Grille
Powerful air inlets, lend the front apron an eye-catching presence. The iconic kidney grille of the BMW 5 series this time is now alive. The Active air stream kidney grille knows when the engine and other components needs air and opens the vents as when required. By keeping the vents closed when not air circulation helps the car in it’s aerodynamics and fuel consumption.
BMW 540i Engine
- Six-cylinder petrol engine, eight-speed Steptronic transmission.
- Capacity: 2,998cc.
- Output: 250 kW/340 hp at 5,500 – 6,500 rpm.
- Maximum torque: 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at 1,380 – 5,200 rpm.
- Acceleration (0–100 km/h [62 mph]): 5.1 s (4.8 s).
MULTIFUNCTIONAL INSTRUMENT DISPLAY
The instrument display for the driver is a 10.2 inch black panel technology screen that gives a beautiful visual of driving details. By default like most cars today, it has three modes which is Comfort, ECO PRO and Sport. All 3 modes has it’s own theme in the instrument display by varying color, font and information shown to the driver. While you change your driving mode the acceleration, steering and gear change will be different; so for instance if you were to change the driving mode to SPORT you can expect the steering to get more stiffer as opposed to the Comfort mode.
Besides fuel gauge, speedometer, rev counter and oil temperature gauge other Information displayed would be ‘check control’ messages (e.g. ‘Bonnet open, door open) or status and warning signs from the Driver Assistance system. The navigation system’s High Guiding and Lane Guiding functions also will be visible.
ACTIVE PROTECTION
Active Protection in the BMW is not what big people would enjoy.
the front seats belts would often reversibly pretension in such a way that you might feel a little uncomfortable at times. If a critical situation arises on the road the comfort seats, the front passenger seat backrest is brought to an upright position. The side windows are closed − as is the sliding roof, if there is one.
One of the excitements of being in the front seats of the BMW 540i were the seats. Firstly it’s quality leather seats with contrast stitching and piping. 16 way electric seat adjustment! They also came with MASSAGE functionality. Buttons will help you choose the intensity and on the screen you could choose atleast 8 different kinds of massage functions that focuses on different areas on your back. While I am driving I prefer not to switch it on as I lose focus to comfort but as a passenger I prefer to enjoy it throughout my drive. I am sure there will be less complaints now sitting in traffic.
Harman Kardon Premium logic 7
The sound system in the latest BMW 540i is a pleasure for the ears. The surround sound system is Hardman Kardon premium logic 7 with crystal clear sound and a powerful bass. Surrounded by upto 16 high performance speakers with 600 watts of power and maintains an excellent sound balance. The design of these speakers are also seamless and goes well integrated with over all beauty of the BMW 5 series.
BMW NIGHT VISION
With BMW night vision you can actually detect people or moving objects in the dark even from a significant distance. An infrared camera mounted on the BMW kidney grille transmits images of people and animals directly onto the Control Display. As soon as the infrared sensors detect pedestrians or larger animals on a potential collision course in the dark, the system directs two separately controlled Dynamic Light Spots onto them, without any unpleasant dazzling effect. This light ensures that both the driver and the person approaching are very effectively warned of a potentially hazardous situation.
ATTENTIVENESS ASSISTANT
The Attentiveness Assistant also monitors your behaviour for signs of fatigue. Your steering responses are analysed and the system reacts to irregular driving behaviour. A notification appears in the Control Display suggesting you take a break.
BMW GESTURE CONTROL
Hand gesture control is a magic that will impress your passengers. You basically can change channels, increase/decrease volume by a simple hand gesture. With BMW Gesture Control, selected functions can be operated by means of defined hand movements. Simple gestures such as ‘swiping’ or ‘pointing’ are identified in the recognition area above the centre console and trigger functions such as accepting or rejecting an incoming telephone call, proceeding or cancelling navigation as well as starting and ending voice recordings. Volume can be adjusted by circular motions of the index finger.(some actions can be see in the picture above)
Ambient Air Package
Here’s an interesting one. You no more have to hang or stick those fancy perfumes in this car. The latest BMW 5 series now has a built in fragrance dispersal function. You can choose from 8 different fragrance with 3 different level of intensity. The sad part, I really didn’t feel it very effective. Couldn’t really feel the fragrance in the car even at the highest intensity.
REAR-SEAT ENTERTAINMENT
Rear-seat entertainment comprises two separate 9.2″ colour screens (tilt-adjustable). DVD drive, navigation and internet access are available during travel. Screens behind are not touch sensitive and can only controlled using remote control provided.
BMW HEAD-UP DISPLAY
The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects information that is situation-specific and relevant to the journey directly into the driver’s field of vision, thereby allowing him or her to fully concentrate on driving. Data such as speed is displayed, along with navigation tips, Speed Limit Info including no-overtaking indicator, telephone and entertainment lists, information and warnings.
CHIEF ASSISTANT
BMW Chief assistant enables automated driving in situations such as traffic jams and slow-moving traffic or on long journeys. Even when changing lanes, they interfere if you were not to use indicator the car steering would pull to the original lane by itself, assuming that you had lost focus while driving.
TRAFFIC JAM ASSISTANT
Traffic jam assistant eases the burden on the driver during monotonous driving situations. At speeds of up to 60 km/h, the system lets the car simply “glide along” with the other cars in dense traffic situations, making traffic jams less stressful. It automatically maintains the desired distance from the vehicle ahead and regulates the car’s speed down to standstill, as well as providing active steering support. The vehicle is therefore able to help the driver stay in the correct lane, as long as the driver keeps at least one hand on the wheel. And if you not having your hands on the steering wheel then there an indication on the display screen to hold the steering wheel, thus you know it’s all sensor around the steering wheel as well.
One of the fascinating devices is the new BMW display key for BMW 5 series. Once upon a time it was only available for BMW 7 series. Futuristic looking key and the display has useful information and commands that you can instruct the car such as to set the cooling inside the car at a particular time or be able to park the car standing outside the car which is specially useful at a tight parking space.
The Remote Control Parking function allows the driver to conveniently get out of the vehicle before parking it via remote control by moving it forward into, or reversing out of, a tight parking space or garage. The Remote Control Parking function is activated by the driver once outside the car, with the BMW display key. Some of the other features available in the display key is as below.
PARKING ASSISTANT PLUS WITH 3D VIEW
The equipment package Parking Assistant Plus makes parking and maneuvering the vehicle easier. It features Surround View including Top View, Remote 3D View, PDC and the Parking Assistant with linear guidance, which parks the vehicle parallel or perpendicular to the lane completely automatically. The system works by measuring potential spaces while driving past them at a low speed. The top view makes it so convenient while parking and the rear camera is very useful while taking your car out of a parking as the reverse camera shows you the cars that are coming your way from the sides and not just directly behind you.
Adaptive LED Headlights
The colour of the light produced by Adaptive LED Headlights is similar to daylight, and they adjust their light distribution automatically depending on the vehicle’s speed and steering angle. I would say this is one of the best headlights experienced.
The trunk space is reasonable and good enough to be happy. Useful compartments also exist. The trunk can open and close electronically. You could also open the trunk by quickly waving the foot underneath the car. Click here to visit their official web page. Click pictures below to see them in full screen view:
