The Volkwagen GOLF GTI is an appealing car to the youth. I remember how much I admired this vehicle during our college days. Although small in size, there was something special about it. A compact sports sedan which is still very much recognizable from the outside but a lot has changed on the inside over the years. The 2021 model is a major update to match the fast growing world of digitization by introducing touch screens, a 3 view instrument cluster, lesser buttons and more of touch and slider controls. The experience and thrill of riding the vehicle remains the same. The starting price would be AED 144,900 which comes with a 2.0 litre TSI Engine producing 180 kW (245 PS), which can take you from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. There is only one type of engine but you get premium fabrics and more features for a higher price.
LED headlights that stretch all the way round to the side wings, while sleek LED tail light clusters dominate at the rear. Additionally a new horizontal LED light strip runs across the entire front. The LED front fog lights that come in the new 5-honeycomb design and are built into the bumper, provide additional light. Golf GTI also will welcome you with light projected out of the exterior mirrors onto the floor. The boot opening button is integrated into the VW badge found in the rear.

The ALL NEW
VW GOLF GTI in 2021 is a complete change from the previous years, where you now see everything in digital display on color screens from the instrument cluster to the center entertainment console. You hardly find any knobs and buttons but instead the controls are now touch sensitive and you can even slide on them to make changes. The gear lever has shrunk to a tiny piece of metal in the center making more room in the center. The exquisite sports seats stand out for it’s sporty design and keeps you comfortable throughout the journey. The seats are actually wrapped in vienna leather with a beautiful black and white tone along with the a red GTI stitching running on the borders. The driver seat controls are electronically adjustable, includes memory seats but unfortunately the front passenger has it all manual. The wireless charging keeps the phone well in the holder without any slipping from it’s charging spot. You also get an indicator when your phone is wirelessly charging on your center display. Apple CarPlay is builtin, so it’s quite handy when to be able use our iOS apps over the vehicle interface.
Setting the Mood
The GOLF GTI also comes with ambient lighting and that too with a selection of different contrasting colors and theme. The ambient lighting is all over on the sides, dashboard and under the feet. The dashboard is dominated by high resolution displays and majority of the functions such as radio, air conditioning can be operated using touch sensitive sliders. That’s one thing I felt different in this vehicle. The touch sensitive controls available on your steering wheel as well, center console, even on the roof helps the driver easily adjust settings in a seamless effort. It’s much more convenient than pressing those traditional buttons. You also have the touch and slide functionality even for the roof controls, so simply touch light to switch in on/off and just slide your finger to get the sun roof slide open.
Informative color screen
There is a 10 inch infotainment screen in the center as well as a 10.25 virtual cockpit which can toggle between different views, plenty of details about the vehicle is displayed besides the typical rev counter, speedometer and mileage counter. With one click of the view button, the driver can have different views of the virtual cockpit which can bring to focus on what he wants to see, like have the maps in full screen, speedometer would automatically shrink to a smaller size making more space for the maps. The cockpit makes it a very personal experience as the driver could customize everything on the instrument cluster and most importantly change information and views with ease using shortcuts available on the steering wheel. You also have the option the change the color for the instrument cluster.
The rear passengers can adjust their own vent temperature and they also have usb c ports available to charge their devices. Actually the rear vents make you realize the vehicle has cheaper material to it. On the rear doors, there is only a window control. I don’t remember finding any buttons to lock the doors. Enabling/ Disabling child lock is old fashioned unfortunately where you need to manually slide the mechanical switch found on the open door. Truck space is decent and you shouldn’t expect too much for the size. I like how we open the boot, which is by sliding the VW badge inward. It’s a little tricky to understand the first time, but you get used to it. The car keys are stylish which comes in a glossy finish.
