Shamiana, TAJ JLT has introduced a new coastal themed night weekend menu. We were quite delighted with our experience as it was completely different menu from the usual for a weekend dinner. The coastal themed night was about treating diners with culinary delights coming from coastlines of Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. Hence get ready to be ambushed by flavorful and spicy dishes on the table. The coastal weekend themed night is AED 225 per person.
We’ve been here before and it’s a pleasant restaurant with beautiful views of the city. They also have a big balcony which you can take advantage of eating with the views of the great Dubai skyline. Shamiana is located at a Grand hotel and so the restaurant is no less. You definitely going to enjoy eating here. It’s mainly an Indian restaurant and India has lots of offer hence they keep introducing different menu in different seasons.
To me personally the starters were the best part. It all begins with their pappad chutney which you get otherwise. Then there is plate consisting some of the top starters from different coastal areas. Some of them have been spicy but then that’s what we enjoyed the most when we think about our flavorful evening at Shamiana. The Trivandrum chicken fry was my favorite from the lot, although others were more inclined giving more score to the grilled Goan prawns. Nevertheless you are going to love the small plates here.
It’s interesting that the soup comes after the small plates. Not sure why is it in that order. It also came with popcorns, which was strange. But who wouldn’t enjoy a popcorn and these were masala popcorn so it did have some flavor to it. The rasam was really soothing to the throat but if I remember the spice level was on the higher side.
Then came the heavy duty items, the fermented rice pancakes were quite filing. Boiled rice is something I’d enjoy in the afternoon, so I left it there and went straight for the chapati to enjoy with those 3 curries provided. The mutton curry was obviously my pick from the lot which had plenty of mutton in it too. The real star was the back pepper crab which was just mesmerizing in taste. I’d say it’s one of they key dishes of the coastal themed night. The slim fish provided had plenty of bones on it that I had to be careful while eating it.
The desserts were also different. Never had some of these desserts before, but thanks to their new theme we get to try some of these traditional desserts. It was mainly a Goan and Kerala treat to the desserts. I loved their coconut ice cream which was homemade. Overall, I’d say it’s been a unique experience, the only downside being that for a price of AED 225 per person, there wasn’t any refill allowed which was a shame cause there were some that you really wanted to have some more but it just wasn’t part of the deal. This could be a turn off to some, otherwise, the coastal theme does take you to a wonderful journey of coastal areas of India. Click here to visit the official website.
