The Volkswagen Touareg has been one of the favourite SUVs for many and has done well for the company over the last few good years. The new model comes with spacious interiors, good looks, innovative cockpit, comfort and convenience. The model we explored is an R-line package which comes in glossy black(roof rail, bumpers, side windows, exterior mirror, front radiator grille, darkened LED tail lights) along with 21″inch alloy wheels, decorative inserts with R-line include front and rear seats having R-line marking on it, a custom ambient lighting for the R-line and body colored bumpers with R-line marking. Surely the R-line give it a sportier and bold look.

The digital instrument cluster, also known as the Digital Cockpit, is located with the screen of the Infotainment system behind a curved display. The infotainment display is slanted towards the driver making it convenient for the driver’s view of angle. The system offers maximum user-friendliness, as it can be operated by touch, voice and gesture control. It’s one of the biggest screens we’ve seen in the front. The huge screen surface is used to display a wealth of functions using appealing graphics and animations. You can even customise the home screen with photos and your favourite function. Many displays can be enlarged using the zoom display. The Head-up Display is projected directly onto the front windscreen in the driver’s primary field of vision at the press of a button. Driving information, including current speed and navigation details is projected onto the windscreen and clearly displayed, helping to reduce the amount of time that the driver’s eyes are averted from the road. The Innovision Cockpit consists of 2 high resolution displays: a centre 15-inch touchscreen, that seamlessly blends into the 12-inch DigitalCockpit Pro. The Innovision Cockpit is customizable, you can arrange information as you wish, zoom into the navigation maps giving a clearer overview of the vehicle settings, assistance and comfort systems. It is angled towards the driver, providing an ergonomically optimised display that puts everything you need within easy reach.
Driver’s assistance systems
- 01 Front Cross Traffic Assist uses radar technology to detect vehicles or pedestrians approaching from the side.
- 02 The Park Assist with rear-view camera not only makes parallel parking easier, but also helps you reverse park into a space at 90 degrees to the kerb.
- 03 Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically adjusts your speed to that of the vehicle in front, ensuring you keep a specified distance.
- 04 The Proactive Occupant Protection System uses the sensors from the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Front Assist traffic monitoring system to detect critical situations with elevated accident potential. If there is the possibility of a collision, it reacts by activating the hazard warning lights and at the same time all windows and sunroof are closed to just a small gap for optimal side airbag deployment. Simultaneously, the seat belt tensioners tighten the front seat belts and electrically adjustable front seats, if fitted, are aligned to enable the seat belts, head restraints and airbags to provide maximum protection.
- 05 The Lane Assist function helps to prevent accidents by using a camera controlled warning system to monitor the vehicle’s position in relation to road markings. At 40mph or above, should Lane Assist detect your vehicle drift out of its lane, the system will take corrective action.
The system also has eight loudspeakers, a DVD drive that plays music in MP3, AAC and WMA formats. Two SD card slots, an AUX-IN socket, two USB ports and a Bluetooth mobile phone interface complete the Infotainment experience. The ambient light lends a pleasing atmosphere inside the vehicle. It is also multi-coloured. There are 30 different colours that you can choose depending on your mood or your passengers’ preferences. The dash panel, center console and doors all have an illuminated rim in a single colour. The indirect light also takes on the selected colour. Your selected colour is also incorporated in the digital displays of the Innovision Cockpit.
The vehicle can also be raised to provide up to 258 mm more ground clearance. The tail end can be lowered up to 50 mm below the standard level, for easier loading and unloading. By selecting “Gravel” and “Sand”, you can therefore adapt the engine and gearbox, as well as the behaviour of certain assistance systems, to the driving conditions. 4MOTION all-wheel drive moves each wheel independently of the others and can therefore also ensure that the vehicle moves forward, even when all wheels are no longer touching the ground off-road.
The Offroad package also includes modifications that keep you moving when the going gets tough – including tank guard, radiator grille, vehicle battery protection and reinforced underseal. Driving in remote areas is enhanced by the larger tank, which holds 90 litres of fuel which was impressive. There is also optional towing package available.
Both driver and passenger seats are electrically adjustable for the seat height, seat length, seat cushion angle, backrest angle and 4-way electrically adjustable lumbar support. Alternatively, the option of Active front climate seats offer a choice of three separate ventilation settings and eight individual pneumatic massage settings for the driver and front seat passenger. This model has the massage functionality which worked very well and gave some comfort to the back.
