Iftar at Makan has been the best set menu so far. It’s got all the bells and whistles to get you excited. It’s literally a kings feast. After attending plenty of set menus for Iftar this year, we can clearly tell this has been the most satisfying Iftar set menu from portion size, quantity, quality and the wide offering of their signature dishes.
Set menu for Iftar at Makan consists of the following:
- 2 kinds of Soup
- 2 kinds of Salad
- Mix Hot Mezzeh
- Mix Cold Mezzeh
- 2 Mains
- 1 Dessert
- Ramadan Juice
- Water
Every table was ready with dates and dry fruits. The dates were big and nice. For Ramadan drinks they had the classic collection such as the Tamarind, Jallab, Ayraan. The Jallab was my favourite from the lot. The yoghurt based drink was just fine, I wouldn’t call it the best though.
The soups have been fantastic here. Firstly, we should appreciate the beautiful looking plates. They are so pretty and makes the items in them even prettier. Makan really makes you feel like eating at a palace. They’ve done a good job of defining fine dining luxury. The soup is also accompanied by a giant lemon and fried bread which you normally dip into these thick soups. The two kinds of salad to be honest were more or less the same in taste. It wasn’t very different from each other. I would be happier just eating the Fattoush.
For the cold dippers, they had an enticing spread from the Arabic Cold Mezzeh. Each one of them were luscious and we just couldn’t resist dipping in them until it finished. My eyes were specially on the Muhammara and Baba Ghanouj. I must admit they make one of the best Muhammara in town. The soft breads accompanied with the cold dippers have also been a great company to these appetizing cold Mezzeh.
The hot appetizers are always my favorite and Makan has a lovely collection of mixed hot appetizers. We loved each one of them which were the falafel, cheese stick, meat kibbeh, spinach fatayer. The spinach fatayer was to be appreciated for how crispy the outer pastry was and heavily stuffed with spinach. The kibbeh would be our next favorite and I can tell there meats are of excellent quality. Hot Chicken liver mixed with pomegranate molasses has been flavorful and you can easily finish them. It was just a joy picking each one of them and gobbling them one by one. Simply irresistible if you generally appreciate chicken livers.
Then came the heavy dose of mains. We were thrilled to see the mixed grill platter served on a wooden grill. They had a combination of Lamb, Beef and Chicken. Surely the meats have been as expected, juicy as ever. The only sad part is the grill doesn’t stay hot even though the grill set is designed to maintain the temperature, but it seems like it’s not doing it’s job well. The Lamb Freekeh was out of this world. I mean the lamb in it was super tender and succulent. The freakeh is also considered to be a healthy dish, so overall this dish was good as gold.
For desserts they had this special platter of Arabic sweets which contained all that you needed to end your Iftar on a high note. We were thrilled by each one of them starting from Halawet el jibn, Cream filled Arabic pastry and Qatayef. I still remember how crisp and lip smacking good the Qatayef had been. Each one of these desserts were competing with each other. These desserts does help you complete this Iftar on a splendid note at Makan. We finally ended on a grand Turkish coffee which was strong and authentic.
