A colorful vibrant little fine dining restaurant awaits you at Dubai Mall serving authentic Japanese cuisine. Kata is a Japanese fine dining restaurant located at the heart of Dubai Mall. More than food, it was the experience eating at the restaurant. The beautiful decor, the premium cutlery, the fine chopsticks, unique designs of their glassware, plates and everything else inside this restaurant makes it a special one. The presentation of the food and drinks has been commendable at KATA. The restaurant also has a first class ticket to the dancing fountain show at Dubai Mall where you get to see the show upfront while you enjoy your meal at KATA. They also have a wonderful website with their detailed menu available. Click here to visit their official website.
It’s actually a small restaurant on the inside with one side facing the LIVE drinks station and their open kitchen, the other side with open views facing the waters of Dubai Mall. The climate is absolutely wonderful to be sitting out here and eating, while you enjoy the LIVE Dubai Mall dancing fountain and it’s lights. Every table had this beautiful dim lights which just made it a perfect table for a romantic spot. It’s a little tricky to find KATA inside Dubai Mall unless you use their navigator. Menu is electronic, you scan using your smart phone and you have pictures of each dish so it makes its a lot easier to decide.
Their drinks are unique, especially when you want to try a non alcoholic one you would be impressed by the amount of good looking drinks you can try here. We went for two distinct looking drinks. More than anything, it was the presentation of these drinks. How they would be presented to you and you wouldn’t be sure where to begin. One of our drinks was flowing from a funnel filled with fruits and it’s juice, whereas the other would unleash vapor. So it was more than just a drink, rather an ultimate experience of drinking. Even a glass of water looked fancy, thanks to their designer glassware.
We started with one of their signature dishes dedicated to Dubai Mall called the Burj Khalifa Roll. Basically sushis stacked up and covered by crispy potato. I think this one’s worth a try, simply for it’s presentation alone. Sushi’s never came this grand with plenty of steam flowing underneath as if the Burj Khalifa Rolls are floating in the clouds. Surf & Turf maki roll came on a heavy wooden base. We got to really appreciate the servers who bring them all the way to the table in one piece. From the vegetables, our pick would be the mushroom on the skewers which were just amazing. I think it was those sauces on it, the mushroom never tasted so good. Chicken Karaage was like eating pop corns, light in texture and taste. From the small plates, the wagyu Tataki was simply irresistible. The yellow tail carpaccio looked the prettiest from the lot and also notice how it is layered across to form a shape of flower. If you look at each pictures you will also notice how each dish came on a different type of plate. No dish came in the same looking plate. That’s how unique KATA offers their dining experience, truly majestic.
The short ribs are not to be missed here. The meat would just fall of your fork as you try to hold it, it was absolutely tender and juicy. The best of beef that anyone would appreciate. The bbq glazed marination also elevated the taste to the next level. Once again a fancy presentation on how the dish would come on a layer of leaf where underneath hot coal would keep it warm. The king prawn was more like pieces of prawn in a prawn shell. For the price, I’d say go for the BBQ glazed short ribs any day.
They also have a unique collection of their own desserts. The black sesame creme brûlée was one of a kind. We hadn’t experienced this one before. The black ice cream and creme brûlée were truly different and I think this was my personal favorite from the dessert collection. The Chocolate Mousseline dessert is one of their hot sellers and surely you enjoy that hazelnut and chocolate but since it was a milk chocolate than a dark chocolate, it was overwhelming sweet for me which could be a turn off to some. By the way, these desserts are so rich that you definitely would want to share with someone. The apple crumble is also one of their signature desserts, if you fancy an apple crumble than this would be a Japanese version from KATA. It’s a complete different experience eating this one and probably the prettiest from the lot. Click here to see the complete menu. Click pictures below to see them in full screen:
