A gem on a rooftop of Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates which we never knew existed. OANJO is a fusion restaurant which provides an exciting menu by blending Japanese and Portuguese flavors. The restaurant sitting right at the top of the building has an outstanding view of the city and from a distance you see the glowing Burj Al Arab and all other buildings in the area. Eating dinner we got to see the city of lights and it’s busy roads where cars are racing to their destination. On the background of our dinner there was LIVE entertainment of a musician playing her trumpet to famous romantic songs. I thought this was the perfect restaurant for a romantic evening, disconnected from the noise and away from the busy streets of Dubai. The restaurant menu consist of Japanese and Portuguese cuisine, you will find all sorts of Japanese dishes such as the makis, nigris, sashimis and familiar Portuguese speciality such as the peri peri chicken and custard pastry.
Located at the top of Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates. The restaurant comes after a swimming pool. I am not sure if the pool is complimentary for diners, but part of the restaurant the drinks bar is located at the corner of the pool. So every time we ask for a drink or even a straw, we could see the waitress walking all the way around the pool to reach the drinks bar located on the opposite side. The in demand seat at the restaurant is obviously next to the windows as you get amazing views of Dubai skyline. The lady with the trumpet was a surprise, didn’t expect this show at the restaurant. She played continuously throughout our 2 hours dinner and the musician definitely did a fabulous job. We loved the plates and the cutlery found on our table which felt premium.
If you wanted a fancy non alcoholic drink then you had only 2 mocktails for your choice. We picked each one of them and they’ve been different, the presentation of these drinks have been commendable. In fact everything that came to our table was a piece of food art. The dinner starts with Chefs surprise of a tiny piece of chicken speciality, thrilling our taste buds with his unique creation. Just a sampler, nothing more. This way we start our dinner at the restaurant on an exciting note. The dynamite and the shrimp tempura came on a piece of slab. It wasn’t just fried shrimps but you also have vegetables in between, but this starter was our favorite as they taste amazing with their sauces while it was crispy in every bite. The Dynamite shrimps is one of their signature items but I actually enjoyed the underlying plane vanilla looking sushi very much which had interesting stuffing inside it. The Tuna and Carabineiro Tiradito had a tangy taste to the dish and this was the best part about it. A simple looking dish but extremely addictive.
The 15 hours Lamb is a must try at OANJO. The presentation itself is beautiful and on top of that it tasted even better especially the combo with pumpkin puree. The cube sized potatoes also was heavy and I’d rather say this is a main course good to share. The tenderloin to be honest was even more attractive, the meat here was even more tender and you just could appreciate the quality of beef. The truffle fries were just fine, I think they could be better as they died out quickly and didn’t stay crisp for long.
We then got a chef selection platter for desserts. The ice creams that comes on this platter especially the mochi was the best part of me. The fruity flavor sorbet was refreshing after a hearty meal. The special chocolate was hard in texture and it was more like a designer chocolate. The Portuguese pastry was made well and tasted original.
